More costs for migrants

The NHS surcharge was introduced in 2015. It added an annual surcharge of £200 per person per application for those applying to come to the UK from outside the EEA for more than six months. It was regarded by many at the time as little more than a stealth tax. The surcharge is reported to have raised £210m in 2016/17.

The Government will today announce plans to double the surcharge to £400 per applicant. Whilst many will welcome the Government’s attempt to clamp down on health tourism, there are concerns that this is yet another disincentive to the “brightest and best” to come to the UK.
