Digital Assets Roundtable: Data – an Emerging Asset Class?
9.15am - Roundtable starts
10.30am - Coffee and networking
11:30am - Event close
This roundtable will explore the rapidly evolving landscape of data trusts and their potential to reshape how organisations (both public and private) manage, share, commercialise, and value data.
‘Data trust’ can refer to different concepts which naturally overlap:
- building trust in data itself, ensuring its accuracy, quality, and ethical use
- developing data governance frameworks that help institutions manage data responsibly
- establishing legal or structural vehicles to oversee and steward data as an asset such as trusts, cooperatives, or foundations.
Our speakers will outline the role of data trusts, exploring their emergence as new vehicle designed to hold, manage, and transact in data marking the potential to unlock new commercial and collaboration opportunities within data governance.
Our discussion will also touch on the emerging intersections with AI, tokenisation, and automated governance, and the questions these raise around ownership, valuation, and ethics. The conversation will explore the social and economic forces driving these developments, beyond the decades-long discourse around data governance towards practical ethical and strategic approaches to data commercialisation in the new digital economy.
We will consider how data trust frameworks can enable intelligent data sharing, open pathways for innovation and support new forms of both intra and inter sector collaboration. In the absence of a settled global leader, the panel will map the current state of play, showing not only that data trust structures are emerging, but also how their interaction with AI and other advanced technologies is paving the way for data liquidity, financial innovation and the creation of a new data asset class.
