Returning Resident Visas

If you previously held Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and have been absent from the UK for more than 2 years, you may be eligible to return and live permanently in the UK as a Returning Resident.

Individuals who have lost their ILR status due to prolonged absence may apply for a Returning Resident visa, provided they can demonstrate:

  • Strong ties to the UK, such as family, property, or business interests;
  • A clear explanation of their current circumstances, including the reason for leaving the UK and the duration of time spent abroad; and
  • A genuine intention to return to settle in the UK and make it their permanent home.

Our Immigration team is well placed to advise on the full eligibility criteria and the documentation required to support a Returning Resident application. For more help with your returning resident application, please contact our Immigration team.
