The media industry tax advisor and accountant, Christopher Lunn, has been convicted for evading more than £6 million in tax.  Lunn is believed to have made up fraudulent claims to benefit both himself and his clients, and HMRC has advised clients to speak to them directly to bring their affairs up to date.

However clients’ of Lunn should be cautious of directly approaching HMRC without first seeking specialist advice.

Edwin Coe Head of Tax Services, Frank Strachan, comments: Effectively HMRC is asking Lunn’s clients to contact them to put their affairs in order.  I would advocate that they seek specialist advice because it is akin to putting your head in the lion’s mouth to approach HMRC directly when your accountant has been found guilty of tax evasion.

HMRC’s mind set will be that the client knew, so they need to ensure that they have the appropriate professional advice to protect their interests when seeking to resolve past issues with HMRC.”
