Jeremy is a partner in the Private Client Team. He describes his practice as one of keeping the wealthy wealthy, although admits that none of his clients consider themselves wealthy.

His clients tend to be UK based but frequently have assets or family members abroad or with non-UK citizenship residence or domicile.

His practice covers the full gamut of Private Client work, whether that is lifetime estate planning or administering estates on death. He advises trustees, and Executors, and acts as both.  And is increasingly in demand as a trusted adviser to families in the round.

Jeremy advises high-net-worth individuals and families, executors, and trustees on:

Tax, Trust & Estate Planning: Structuring wealth to minimize tax and safeguard assets.

Complex and high value estate administration:  Helping executors and beneficiaries navigate the difficulties presented by poorly drawn wills, complicated assets, overseas succession rules, or difficult beneficiaries and family members.

Trusteeship and stewardship: Preserving and passing on family wealth in a smooth and timely way, to ensure continued enjoyment by future generations.

Jeremy seeks always to understand his clients’ motivations and values and those of the wider family. This helps avoid solutions which may later give rise to resentment or conflict, and to resolve situations where it is already present. This experience combined with deep technical expertise, and a natural empathy and discretion enable him to provide advice which is not just technically sound, but uniquely suited and appropriate to each family’s individual requirements.

EXPERIENCE
Jeremy’s experience includes:
Trustee of a group of high value family trusts owning substantial listed share portfolio, commercial real estate, and private equity.
Restructuring a will trust following a surprise substantial dividend, enabling an early release of capital without compromising the financial security of the income beneficiary, at the same time significantly improving the tax profile of the trust as a whole.
Acting under a power of attorney to wind up the business of a literary agent and arrange his affairs to support him in his sheltered accommodation.
Acting as an executor, in a potentially litigious estate, working hard with co-executor to contain a disappointed and potentially damaging beneficiary.
Acting as Trustee in a group of family trusts navigating repeated attacks from a family member.
Advising the executors of an estate with a potential reservation of benefit in an overseas trust, identifying a legal argument as to why the beneficiary had not become the settlor despite assets having come into his hands.
Identifying a mismatch between the taxation regimes of two jurisdictions in which a client had assets and preparing wills to capitalise on the difference to significantly reduce the overall tax exposure
Advice to a family with a longstanding offshore trust, bringing the same to the UK under direct family control without triggering a tax charge, and so significantly simplifying the administration and reducing running costs.
