Valerie Sweeting is an Associate in the Commercial Disputes & Class Actions team. She is an experienced commercial litigator with a specialist focus on claims against financial institutions and businesses in the leisure sector.

Valerie has particular expertise in matters arising from breaches of consumer credit law, regularly advising clients on complex disputes involving unfair lending practices, mis-selling, and regulatory non-compliance. Her strategic approach and deep understanding of consumer protection legislation make her a trusted advisor in high-stakes litigation.

 

Valerie holds a BA in Economics from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, followed by a Graduate Diploma in Law from the University of Westminster in London.

 

Before joining the firm, Valerie gained experience in the banking sector in the Bahamas and contributed to human rights advocacy through her volunteer work with Amnesty International’s Africa Advocacy Unit in Washington, D.C.

 

She qualified as a non-practising barrister in 1998 and was admitted as a solicitor in 2000.

EXPERIENCE
Valerie’s experience includes:
Effectively represented claimants in group litigation involving the mis-selling of timeshares and claims under the Consumer Credit Act 1974, securing a favourable resolution.
Advising clients on a cancelled cruise dispute, including participation in joint settlement meetings to negotiate resolution.
Advising clients on legal issues arising from fractional ownership of timeshares marketed as investment opportunities.
Advised client on airline liability for lost, damaged, or delayed baggage under the Montreal Convention 1999, as implemented through the Carriage by Air Acts Order 2002.
