Hetal Sanghvi will be speaking at the Citywealth Forum on the topic of ‘Africa’.

Joining a panel of experts, Hetal Sanghvi, a partner within our Tax team, will explore the rise of wealth in Africa and discuss the mindset of African families dealt with in Sub-Saharan Africa, and the nuances of how they structure, diversify, and internationalise their wealth.

By 2030, a fifth of the world’s population will be from Africa and by 2050, a third of all children globally will be African. Total individual wealth on the continent is expected to rise by 34% reaching over US$3trillion by 2027. The sheer magnitude of this rising population, the wealth creation and accumulation involved, combined with the increasing access to sophisticated wealth planning tools and interest from practitioners travelling in from International Finance Centres means giving clients the most comprehensive advice is even more crucial than ever.

Edwin Coe is delighted to be hosting Khaitan & Co, a leading Indian Law Firm, for a joint seminar discussing the Tax and Legal Considerations for UK/India succession matters and global mobility issues for wealthy families.

The seminar will be held at our London offices on Tuesday, 10 September.

With families of Indian origin becoming increasingly international, cross-border succession is a highly topical issue. We will discuss protection of wealth held onshore in India and wealth held in other non UK jurisdictions, especially where beneficiaries of the estate are resident in the UK. Many families of Indian origin, across the world, now have family members residing in the UK, and retaining various non UK assets.

There are opportunities for pre-arrival planning to create a low tax environment for worldwide income and gains once resident in the UK, and flexibility for tax efficient movement of funds to the UK. The UK has an increasingly complex tax regime and insuring assets are protected across generations, and across borders is something Tax Partner Hetal Sanghvi and Private Client Partner David Goepel of Edwin Coe, and Private Client Partner, Bijal Ajinkya of Khaitan & Co will explore together.

The recent summer budget saw the announcement that significant changes will be made to the regime for non-domiciled individuals from April 2017 onward. We also saw that further changes will be introduced to the taxation of structures holding UK residential property.

The ramifications for both clients and their advisers cannot be underestimated. The window for clients to seek advice and potentially restructure their affairs in advance of the changes is limited but, the opportunity does exist.

Edwin Coe’s experienced tax team will be discussing the impending changes, what it means for clients, and what opportunities still exist. They will also be available to address any specific concerns or issues you might have.

Agenda

The 15 year rule change

Excluded property trust structures

Use of life assurance

Temporary non-residence planning

Revisions to the residential property regime

Double Taxation Agreements

The widening of the scope of Inheritance Tax.
