In the past you knew what a leader looked like – a white male of a certain age and background. Each decade since the 1950s has seen an increase in difference at work, yet many leaders are not equipped, preferring to operate in a ‘one size fits all’ style. We need a new standard if we want to move forward.
Good modern leadership involves appointing and learning to lead those different from yourself – personality, motivators, gender, race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation and ability. When coaching senior leaders, we often have to work at breaking down assumptions relating to all of these.
